Shock Horror: A Ghost Story
Buxton Opera House October 20th
An early Halloween treat, what better than spooky ghost story about a Victorian Cinema played out in an Victorian old Theatre! This one man play featuring Alex Moran as Herbert, all alone in a disused theatre reflecting on his life, through his love of horror movies. Memories of his childhood are projected behind him on the stage, his Mother and Father loom large with thick Scottish accents. The stage itself is triumph of set design with film reel cannisters, dusty photos and props scattered around. The creepy goings on many,at one point Herbert hiding under a sheet with only a torch light illuminating disappears, to reappear through a door at the rear of the stage! How?! Refernces to horror movies are dotted throughout, a red balloon floats from a filing cabinet “IT” a character on the screen is called Karras(Exorcist) ;and in the second half a creepy ventriloquist doll which comes to life is a nod to –I believe –“Magic”with it’s wise cracking character. All in all it did feel to fade out towards the end though with no big climax and left some people wondering what the hell had been happening. Sadie Middleton
